A Unified Approach toQuantifying Algorithmic Unfairness: Measuring Individual & Group Unfairness via Inequality Indices

چکیده
Discrimination through algorithmic decision making has received considerable attention recently. Prior work on the topic largely focuses on defining conditions for fairness, but does not define proper measures of algorithmic unfairness. In this paper, we focus on the following practically important question: Given two unfair algorithms, how should we determine which of the two is more unfair? Our core idea is to use existing inequality indices from economics to measure how unequally the outcomes of an algorithm benefit different individuals or groups in a population. Our work offers a well-justified and generalizable framework to compare the (un)fairness of a variety of algorithmic predictors against one another. This unifying approach allows us to quantify unfairness both at the individual and the group level. Furthermore, our work reveals previously overlooked tradeoffs between different fairness notions: using our proposed measures, the overall individual-level unfairness of an algorithm can be decomposed into a between-group and a within-group component. Earlier methods are typically designed to tackle only between-group unfairness, which may be justified for legal reasons. However, we demonstrate that minimizing exclusively the between-group component may, in fact, increase the withingroup, and hence the overall unfairness. Finally, we characterize and illustrate the existence of tradeoffs between our measures of (un)fairness and the prediction accuracy. Distributive Unfairness and Satisfaction with Democracy: Linking Inequality, Fairness Perceptions, and Political Support in Latin America
How does economic inequality affect political support in democracies? Recent research shows that high levels of inequality are associated with low levels of support for and satisfaction with democracy, yet our understanding of this relationship remains incomplete. I argue that people become politically dissatisfied when they view inequality through a lens of distributive unfairness— i.e., unfai...
متن کاملReacting to Unfairness: Group Identity and Dishonest Behavior
We experimentally investigate whether individuals are more likely to engage in dishonest behavior after having experienced unfairness perpetrated by an individual with a salient group identity. Two individuals generate an endowment together, but only one can decide how to share it. They either share the same group identity or have distinct group identities. Then, they approach a task in which t...

By drawing from theoretical perspectives suggesting that unfair conditions threaten fundamental psychological needs, perceived unfairness at work was proposed and tested as a predictor of resting blood pressure. As part of the Midlife Development in the United States Biomarkers project, participants completed questionnaires measuring perceived unfairness, self-esteem and coworker support. Resti...
متن کاملRetaliation as a response to procedural unfairness: a self-regulatory approach.
When does procedural unfairness result in retaliation, and why do recipients of unfair treatment sometimes pursue and other times inhibit retaliation? Five studies addressed these questions. The authors proposed and found that regulatory focus moderates retaliation against an unfairness-enacting authority: Promotion-focus participants were more likely to retaliate than prevention-focus particip...
متن کاملPerceived unfairness and socioeconomic inequalities in functional decline: the Dutch SMILE prospective cohort study
BACKGROUND People in lower socioeconomic positions report worse health-related functioning. Only few examined whether perceptions of unfairness are particularly common in these people and whether this perceived unfairness relates to their subsequent poor health outcomes. We thus set out to examine the contribution of perceived unfairness to the higher risks of physical and mental dysfunction in...
